The environmental remote sensing data are collected from a research aircraft BN-2T-4S Defender. The aircraft can fly long distances compared to any twin turboprop in its class, and it operates from short, unprepared runways in all weather conditions during day and night. The aircraft can cover 100km² in one flying hour and has a maximum endurance of around eight hours.
Compared with the ground-based data collection, the remote sensing data can be easily collected from the wet, overgrown and mountainous areas which are difficult to access on foot.
The operator of the research aircraft is SIA „Meža īpašnieku konsultatīvais centrs”, the company authorized to perform aerial works (AOC No. LVA-SAD/005, Operating Licence No. 2015-1).
